Kristof
In last Friday’s New York Times, Nicholas D. Kristof suggests that the U.S. is moving towards a “religious Great Awakening.” Americans, more and more, are putting much more emphasis on “faith” and less on actual historical or scientific evidence. He specifically cites from a Harris Poll that 91% of Christians (and even 47% of non-Christians) believe in the Virgin Birth. Despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, people still believe in this myth.
This scares me. We are waging wars because of the danger posed by Islamic fundamentalists. But, we ignore the danger of our own Christian fundamentalism. As we ignore logic and reason in favor of faith, we steadily move in the direction of that which we now define as evil.
Unfortunately, I predict that the occassional abortion clinic bombing or hate crime will become all the more common and accepted. As the fundamental Christian ideology become our only standard for a moral life, these horrible crimes will not only become to be accepted, but they will come to be revered. There is no difference between some people killing infidels in the name of Allah and some people killing infidels in the name of God.
